Three ways Koreans count age
- International age (만 나이): the global standard. Since June 2023 it is the legal default in Korean law and official documents.
- Korean counting age (세는 나이): you are 1 at birth and everyone gains a year on January 1. Still heard in daily conversation.
- Year age (연 나이): current year minus birth year. Used for some rules such as military service and youth protection laws.
Note: the zodiac year here follows the solar calendar; traditionally it changes at Lunar New Year.
