Public IP vs. private IP

A public IP identifies your home (or office) router on the internet and is assigned by your ISP. The address shown on this page is your public IP.

A private IP is the address your router gives each device inside the network (192.168.x.x, 10.x.x.x etc.) and isn't visible from outside. On Windows, check it with ipconfig in Command Prompt; on Mac, under System Settings → Network.

When you need your IP address

  • Remote access to work or school, adding to server firewall allowlists
  • Setting up external access to game servers, CCTV or a NAS
  • Checking that your VPN is connected properly

The location shown is an approximate area based on ISP registration info and may differ from your actual address.

FAQ

My IP keeps changing.

Most home internet uses dynamic IPs, which can change when you restart the router or after a while.
