How image compression works
File size depends on resolution (width × height in pixels) and compression quality. Smartphone photos (about 4000×3000) are usually 3–8MB; at 1600px wide and 80% quality most drop to around 300KB with almost no visible difference.
Recommended settings by purpose
- ID photos and documents for government or job sites: 1000–1200px wide, 80% quality (usually under 200KB)
- Blogs and shop product pages: 1200–1600px wide, WebP at 80% quality
- KakaoTalk and email attachments: 1920px wide, 85% quality
No privacy worries
This tool compresses photos in your browser without uploading them to a server. Re-saving also removes EXIF info such as the shooting location (GPS).
FAQ
Can PNGs be compressed too?
Change the output format of a PNG to JPG or WebP and the size drops a lot. If you need a transparent background, choose WebP.
Does the original quality drop?
At 80% quality or higher, the difference is hard to see. For print, we recommend 90% or higher.
