The 50/30/20 rule
Spend 50% of after-tax income on needs (housing, food, transport, phone, insurance), 30% on wants (dining out, shopping, leisure) and 20% on savings and investing. If rent is a big share, adjust to 60/20/20; to build seed money fast, try 40/20/40.

FAQ
Is 20% savings too hard?
At first, even 10% — what matters is setting aside savings first with an automatic transfer on payday. Registering your savings as a fixed expense in the budget book makes it easy.
